Guhagar is a place right on the beach on the Konkan coast with a large beach side and the shady tall Suru trees and the heritage temples and, of course, the Konkani cuisine with vast tranquil beaches for the company. Guhagar is a tiny little place on the west coast of India and is a picturesque place that is loved by the tourists. Guhagar in the local dialect means ‘Cave House’ and is popular among devotees as it is also a temple town with prominent Hindu temples all over the place.
Guhagar today is a perfect getaway destination with its soft, sandy beaches with innumerable water sporting facilities and the lovely atmosphere here, which is serene and not so crowded like the other beach locations. The beach here stretches for almost 6 km and is lined with trees that of coconut, betel nuts and Alphonso mangoes. The beaches are simply unpolluted and unexploited so that you enjoy every bit of it. The lofty hilly terrains provide a scenic background to the beach.
Best time to visit
Guhagar experiences typical coastal climate and temperature that is the tropical climate. The best period to visit is from November to February. The temperature during this time is great, and you can experience pleasant climate during this time.
Summer – Summers here are very hot that last from March to May. The temperature ranges from 35 degree Celsius to 40 degree Celsius and is very hot and humid at this time of the year.
Monsoons – Monsoons begin from June and end by October. The place experiences heavy rainfall and the beach, and the sea is also very rough and impossible to enter the waters. However, the climate is pleasant, and the weather is cool.
Winter – Winters are the best months to visit Guhagar, and you can freely roam around during this time of the year. Winters begin from November and lasts up to February.

How to reach
Air – The nearest airport is in Ratnagiri that is the Ratnagiri airport. From here one can take the bus or taxi and reach Guhagar, which is just a few km from the airport. The airport has flights from various major cities of the country like Mumbai, Pune, etc.
Railway – The nearest railheads is in Chiplun, and it is well connected to Mumbai and Goa. There are several trains that run regularly from this route and thus, connect to various cities of the country. The Chiplun railway station is 40 km from Guhagar, and so you can easily hire a taxi or bus and reach Guhagar.
Roads – You will find a good network of road that will help you reach Guhagar. The distance from Mumbai to Guhagar is 289 km, from Pune it is 239 km and from Goa, it is 440 km. There are several public means of transport as well as private taxis that will take you to your destination.

Religious

Guhagar has religious importance and is supposed to be a village of the pilgrims. There are several Hindu temples here, and the population too comprises of the majority of Hindu population. Visit the Vyadeshwar Shiv Mandir in Guhagar that is a wonderful temple, which is ancient and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple being an old one comes with brilliant architecture and is a wonderful place. The next is the Asthavane Ganpati Mandir that is another temple that is right in the village and is a must visit. Shree Vaidershwar Mandir is visited by the local frequently along with the tourists for its religious importance and the several festivals that are carried out here. The other temples are Shree Durga Mandir, Ganpati Mandir, Durga Devi temple, Dixit Ganpati Mandir, etc.

Beaches

The most beautiful beach is the Guhagar beach. The beach is among the cleanest one in the Konkan coast and is pretty and safe as well. Budhal is also a great beach that offers serenity and beauty. Palshet beach is just 12 km from Guhagar and is a perfect desolate beach. It is still a virgin beach that is unexplored.

Shopping

There are no malls or shopping stores here as it is a very small village. If you want to buy something you can go to the main market area in the village where you can check some readymade clothes and foodstuff as well. The local goods that you can buy here are the papads, mango products, phanas wadi, which is a sweet delicacy made out of jackfruit and amba poli that is made out of mango pulp.

Historical

The only place of interest that has historical significance is the Gopalgad, which is in Anjanvel that is 11 km north of Guhagar. It was built in the 16th century by the Siddis and was captured by Shivaji Maharaj in 1660. Today, it is in ruins over 7 acres of land. The other important forts are located in the city of Ratnagiri and nearby places.

Restaurant

In Guhagar, you can easily get home cooked food as well as restaurant food. The home cooked food contains the regular Konkani food that is loved by tourists, which can be vegetarian or nonvegetarian. You simply cannot miss the Konkani food or thali that comprises of fried fish, fish curry, fish pulao, plain rice, kokum kadhi, ukdi che modak, sok kadi, musale, etc. The vegetarians should try the thalipeeth, modak, solkadi, poha, etc. However you also get Punjabi food and south Indian dishes as well. Some of the popular restaurants are Suruchi’s Konkani food, Hotel Vainateya, Mody villa, etc.

Adventure

Indulge in several water sports activities like the sea kayaking, Jet Ski ride, bumper tube ride, banana boat ride, etc. Swimming is also a sport that is loved by all and is very safe on the beach.
Scuba diving – Scuba diving is provided at the Chand Ghal where only the experienced are allowed to scuba dive in the sea.
Business hub – This small town largely depends on pilgrims and tourists who come here every year.

Other attraction

Palshet – at Palshet you can explore the newly discovered Waghbil cave or the Murundi cave nearby.
Borya Bunder and Karul – it is located at a distance of around 22 km from Guhagar and is a port with a small village. It’s a beautiful place that every tourist will definitely visit.
Tavsal Bunder – it is a port around 35 km from Guhagar and is at the Tavsal creek. There is water on one side and Jaigad on the other. You can also visit the fort of Vijaygad, which is a little distance away from here. Take the ferry and explore the Tavsal creek.
Guhagar is a beach village located on the beach and is full of ancient temples and has a rich tradition and culture. The village is simple with pristine beaches and wonderful people.
